The Knight is a member of the Order of the Chivalry which is a Society wide order representing the highest recognition one can receive for martial prowess (see armored combat) and thus carries a Patent of Arms.
A Knight is required to swear fealty.
The badge for this order is a white belt worn usually around the waist. They may also wear an unadorned gold chain and gold spurs.
Companions of this order are titled "Sir" (women can choose to use the title "Dame"). Many individuals choose to use persona-specific variations on "Sir." A full listing of these can be found here All Knights may put the abbreviation KSCA behind their name.
It is said that "Only a knight can make a knight." and in the Middle Kingdom knighting ceremony if the King performing the knighting is not a knight himself, a knight must be present and place his hand on the Sword of State, Oathbinder so that the knighting is happening at the hand of a knight.
The dependant of a knight is a Squire and/or Man at Arms whom they give martial and chivalric instruction.
Thus, there are two lineages for each knight. That of squires to knights, and that of the knight who's hand was on the sword when they were elevated to knighthood.
Knighthood is equal in rank to the Master of Arms, Laurel, Pelican and Defense.
In addition to great Prowess, Knights in the SCA are expected to exemplify the other Chivralic Virtues. Or as one Duke put it "to be a Knight, you've got to learn to dance."
