History
Our Canton started in 2011 as the Barony of Fenix’s “East Side A&S” group, which allowed the eastern-most members of the Barony the chance to participate in Baronial A&S twice a month, without the need to travel into the city. As the group grew and attracted other interests, an archery practice was offered, which eventually became the Baronial archery practice. In 2012, with the blessing of their Excellencies Hengist Hawardessune & Hypathia of Inishmohr of Fenix, and by majority vote as dictated by SCA and Middle Kingdom Law, the canton was officially started.
Our original idea of a name was Rus Silvae, which we believed to have translated from Latin to “going to the woods”. The name was returned from the College of Heralds as unusable. Since most of the eastern side of the Barony is wooded, and two major state parks are located on the east side, we hoped to retain the spirit of the wood theme in our name. After some research on possible names, the members of the Canton voted for Geatwald, translated from Middle English to “wooded gate”. Middle English pronunciation guides indicated “geat” should be pronounced like “get”.
