About
Hrothgeirsfjordr or Hrothgeirsfjorthr (or spelled with proper Icelandic letters, Hróðgeirsfjörðr) is a Canton of the Barony of Red Spears in the North Oaken Region of the Middle Kingdom. It is based in the Toledo, Ohio/Lucas county area.
Heraldry
- Arms/Device - Sable, a heron volant, wings displayed and inverted, argent within a laurel wreath Or.
History
The original name for the March of the Crossing of Red Spears had been Hrothgar's Fjord. The March of the Crossing of Red Spears in Toledo eventually became the founding group for the Barony of Red Spears in 1989. After the Marche of the Marshes became a full status group and Canton of Red Spears in 1993 it was decided to create a new Canton in Toledo and use the original name for the Toledo group. With the assistance of Master Talan Gwynek the name was registered as the Canton of Hróðgeirsfjörðr.
Note: the Anglicized spelling most commonly used is Hrothgeirsfjordr using "th" for the first "ð" and "d" for the second to closer match the English words Hrothgar and fjord.
Heraldry History
The name Canton of HróðgeirsfjörÐr was registered with the SCA College of Heralds in June of 1998.
The name was corrected to Canton of Hróðgeirsfjöðrr in April of 1999.
The name was corrected, again, to Canton of Hróðgeirsfjörðr in February of 2015.
The heraldic device was registered in November of 1998.
Events
The Fjordr typically holds one event per year, the second Saturday in December called Yule Feast. This event traditionally held a competition for Baronial Rapier Champion and Baronial A&S Champion until the creation of the Black Swamp War Games event.
The first Baronial Youth Rapier Champion and Baronial Youth A&S Champion were awarded at Yule Feast in 2020.
