Persona
9th century Norse
Hjalmr, son of Njal, was born in 846 in Tønsberg. During his childhood, he learned the art of silversmithing and helped tend shop under the watchful eye of a master silversmith. When not crafting jewelry, older warriors in the village taught him the skills necessary to join the raids. When he was 15 he joined his first raid, and split his time between silversmithing in the winter and going viking during the summer months when the seas were calm enough to traverse. In 866 he and the raiders joined Ivar the Boneless and his great heathen army and fought his way across the west, eventually settling down in Jorvik late in the year. When the seasons started to turn, he built a small shelter and left going viking behind in favor of starting a home and shop and colonizing Jorvik with those who stayed behind.
