Spurs

Spurs are devices which strap or otherwise attach to the boot heels of rider on horseback. The spurs are used to give instructions to the mount.

Knighthood and horsemanship have a long kinship, the French term for knight translates directly as "horseman". Thus the wearing of spurs has become a symbol of knighthood. While not specifically restricted by sumptuary law, it is customary in the Middle Kingdom that spurs are only worn by knights, squires or those engaged in equestrian activities.

Earlier spurs are simple points, while in later centuries wheel spurs were developed. (anyone know more about the history of spurs want to chime in?)
