Persona
Rijckaert (Richard in these English speaking lands) is a minor landowner from Utrecht. Hearing the call to Crusade, he helped fund one ship that sailed with other Flemish forces as part of the Fifth Crusade (1218-1222), fighting during the battle to take Damietta. Upon the surrender of Crusader forces when they were cut off from attacking Cairo due to Nile flooding, he paid a ransom to be released along with members of his household. He returned to Utrecht to manage his estate, building a small fortune trading in spices he grew fond of in his travels.
