Persona

I have two personae; the original persona, that of a 13th Century Scot, was known as Gavin Urquhart, of the Clan Urquhart. Second and more prevalent persona, is the one before you, whom the Heralds have named Jack Black of Flint.

When I first started in the Soceity, here in the Midrealm, I chose to follow my lineage, and went with my family name, Urquhart (Urk-hart). I found, in doing my research, that the Urquhart Clan were the Hereditary Sheriffs of County Cromarty, working under the Clan Fraser. Most amusing part of it was that I was working in Law Enforcement at the time, 700 years later. Gavin Urquhart followed Robert De Moray after the (first) destruction of the family castle on the shores of Loch Ness. After being nearly killed by DeMoray, Gavin ended up in the armies led by William Wallace against the English. After fighting alongside Wallace at the battle of Sterling bridge, Gavin disappeared. Noone really knows where he went, or why. He was last seen in the Kingdom of Atlantia, after being caught by their Crown in service to newcomers.

Currently, I am a 16th century Ship's Captain. I am not a pirate, despite frequent questions to the contrary. Pirates get hanged in polite society! *chuckles* I am a pre-emptive salvage specialist! Jack was found on the doorstep of a church near the docks in London, in January of 1564. Raised by the church, he was taught to read, write, and do math. He also learned several languages in service to the church.

However, his love was the smell of the sea, and the sounds of the ships coming in and out of the docks on a daily basis. Enthralled with the sailors that came in to the church, he decided that he wanted to live a life at sea, as opposed to the path the church was carving for him. At about age 10, he ran away from the church, and managed to find a job as a cabin boy for a merchant captain. On his second voyage, the ship was attacked, and his Captain killed. He was taken aboard The Raptor, which was then owned by Captain Richard Keith, from Ireland. Quickly showing the Captain his skills, he managed to avoid getting killed. As he became part of the crew, he quickly learned everything he could about life at sea, in addition to the skills he had learned in the Church. Having only gone by the name of "Jack" given to him by one of the nuns, the crew soon added "Flint" as his last name. They thought it was funny how as a youth, Jack was quick to spark into a raging flame. After Captain Keith's death, the crew unanimously elected Jack as replacement. At that time, Jack took to wearing more black when at Sea, as a symbol. He also became known for carrying the item that he was nicknamed after, a blackjack that he called his "recruitment tool". Hence the name, "BlackJack"

Protege to Maestra Giovanna Adimari

Protege

NOTE*** This is a work in progress....

I started out working for Maestra Giovanna as one of her Regional Chatelains. I found that we had many things in common, and many of the same goals and interests, both inside and outside of the Society.

After several months, she and Master Midair were making a joke about why I wasn't wearing either my belt or medallion, and I commented that I had neither, and was in the market for a Peer.

She and I had a long conversation about it that day, and I entered into a Student relationship for a year. After that, we agreed that we could both be of service to the other, as sources of inspiration, knowledge, and working towards our common goals, so here we are.

Arts & Sciences

  • Classes:
    • "They Wore What?: What sailors really wore in period"
    • "Who's Really Running the Ship?: Rank and file at sea"

Interests and SCA-related hobbies

SCA-wide, I enjoy armored combat, fencing, learning about the many and various Arts & Sciences, and helping out at events.

I am working on putting together navigational tools and equipment used on ship during our period.

My biggest passion is working with newcomers, and sharing the dream that is our Society.
