1. An heraldic flag showing the arms of an individual in much the same fashion as a modern flag, except that it is either square or taller than it is wide. The banner indicates the actual presence of an individual and should not otherwise be flown. The square, or armorial, banner, was once considered reserved by sumptuary law for persons of peerage rank or above in Middle Kingdom usage, but the custom is no longer in effect, and any member may fly a banner, and indeed is encouraged to do so.
