A more generic and genderless term for a Lady in Waiting.

A retainer is attendant upon a Queen, King, Prince, Princess or other Royal personage. Sometimes Landed Barons or baronesses may have a retainer as well.

As the burden of their office prevents these royal personages from performing certain mundane tasks, the retainers job is important to support the Crown and help them fill the ceremonial role they hold. For example: The Queen should not be carrying hay bales about.

Duties of Retainers include:

  • Keeping notes of gifts or important meetings
  • Reminding Their Majesties of Their schedule
  • Making sure the royal person has food and water at regular intervals
  • Carrying gifts or tokens
  • Fetching items or delivering messages
