Miscellany
Mundanely, I hail from Kent, Ohio, where I have been a lifelong resident (except for my first two years which were spent in my birthplace of Berea, Ohio) and am a 1979 graduate of Kent State University (B.A., theatre, minor in anthropology). I am a retired paraprofessional outreach librarian, having worked for 30 years in the Akron-Summit County Public Library system (1983-2013). Outside of the SCA, I have multiple interests ranging from local and American history to genealogy to singing in a local town/gown choir and much more too numerous to mention! I enjoy hiking, water aerobics, swimming, and of course, archery. In 2012, I became involved in what ultimately became a successful effort to save a historic 1858 house that turned out to have been built by our town’s namesake Kent family. I was also partly responsible for helping to save a historic 1828 house in 2005 in Streetsboro, a community north of Kent. Someday, it’s my dream to write a local history book about research done on extant pre-Civil War homes still standing here in Kent, and a few that we sadly lost in recent years.
I joined the Marche of Gwyntarian on Thursday, September 29, 1977 while a junior studying Theatre at Kent State University. I have served as Chronicler, Deputy Pursuivant, Minister of Arts, Minister of Sciences, Minister of Arts & Sciences. I also taught dancing for many years and headed up the Gwyntarian Scribe’s Guild that was recognized by the Midrealm with an Award of the Purple Fretty for providing the Kingdom with numerous scrolls and scroll blanks. I currently serve as Baronial Archery Marshal for the Barony of Brendoken. I have entered multiple Regional and Kingdom Arts & Sciences Faires with my work in calligraphy and illumination and also served as judge for many decades in both. I can usually be found dividing my time between the battlefield serving as water bearer and archery range serving as marshal at Pennsic and other events and practices throughout the year.
I have been recognized for my extensive work in Calligraphy & Illumination by being made a member of the Order of the Willow and the Order of the Evergreen. I hold the Order of the Dragon’s Heart that was given to me at Pennsic 25 for extensive years of Kingdom service. I was made a member of the Order of the Dragons Barb for excellence in and service to archery.
I am also known throughout the Kingdom as a battlefield water bearer of many decades experience.
For 20 years, between 1994 and 2014, I served as a Protege to His Grace, Duke Sir Dagan du Darregonne, KSCA, OP as a member of House Redwingedlion, but his death ended that relationship, so I retired my yellow belt. In November 2024, I was taken as Protege to Meistara Thorhalla Carlsdottir af Broberg, OL, OP and made a member of House of the Mountain Bridge. I have been named the Household Archery Champion. I now proudly wear my old yellow belt once more.
I am both a Royal Round (Bowman) and handbow GAT (Grand Archery Tournament) ranked archer. I am also a warranted archery marshal in the Middle Kingdom and have been since 2015. I have spent many years working at the archery range at Pennsic and have worked as a marshal at the Champions shoot as well each year. In summer 2024, I was named to the Midrealm Pennsic Archery Champions Team along with 10 of my other fellow members of the Brendoken Archers Guild. We were recognized for that with the Award of the Dragon’s Flight this past winter of 2025.
I recently completed a warrant as an Archery Instructor. I run the Brendoken Archer’s Guild Facebook page as a clearinghouse for archery related information. I post archery tournament scores to the SCA Scores Site and encourage others to do likewise and encourage our local archers to gain both Society wide rankings in the Grand Archery Tournament (GAT) and a Kingdom ranking in Royal Rounds. I also run the Gwyntarian Winter Challenge shoot each year that may be found on the SCA Scores Site.
Here is where you can follow the progress of my archery scores for all of the shoots in which I compete and for scores that are posted for both events and local practices in which I participate:
