Persona
Lady Annalena Cecilia Massari is a virtuosa singer from 1580s/1590s Florence who sings and conducts around the Knowne World. She began singing as a child...and would not stop...so her parents found her teachers from among their colleagues within the artistic circles of Florence. She became known for her light, clear, and agile voice, and she has found herself singing as a soloist and with concerto delle donne ensembles in courts throughout northern Italy, though she enjoys traveling and performing many types of music from throughout the Knowne World. She is also sought after as a music director and teacher.
Historical Basis
Mundanely, I am a professionally-trained soprano. My voice delights in high and fast notes, so virtuosa singers and the concerto delle donne immediately came to mind in the development of my persona. These ladies were the first female professional singers. They were known for their vocal virtuosity and improvisation, and they also had skill as instrumentalists and dancers. On court rolls, they showed as ladies-in-waiting, but they were really brought to court for their singing. Because they were trained singers, composers wrote challenging repertoire for them that reflected their skill.
