A favorite "colored belt" memory of mine:

When my knight, Comar, sat on the throne as Prince, the household joined him in camping at MidRealm Royal. My squire brother Christopher and I were returning from the food count, only to find that guards had been posted to the gate to refuse admittence to camp due to a meeting. Chrisopher, put out that he couldn't return to his tent, grabbed his purple belt and held it in front of the eyes of the hapless guards, saying, "Do you see this belt? Do you now what a purple belt MEANS?" When the guards admitted their ignorance (and well they should, since a purple belt means nothing) Christopher said, "Well, I suggest you find out!" and barged into camp.
