Jararvellir

Now a part of the Kingdom of Northshield, at one time Jararvellir (which currently comprises the area of Madison Wisconsin) was the 4th ranked (oldest) Barony of the Middle Kingdom.

Brief History
When the Barony was founded in 1971, it comprised all of Wisconsin (as was traditional in the early days of our Society.) The apocryphal story goes "Tom & Dale-Harriet, who would go on to be Hrafn and Asdis, wrote to SCA headquarters in Milpitis, CA and asked where they could find the closest SCA group. The response came back "Congratulations, you are now Baron & Baroness of Wisconsin."
The Barony was named by Baron Hrafn Tolftungr: "Jarar" for the Yahara River which graces our lands, "Vellir" is the Icelandic word for "plains" -- hence, "Plains of the Yahara River." Further - "Yahara" is a made-up Indian name for "catfish"; our shining stream was originally called "Catfish Creek". (Thus the Baronial arms, which display two catfish.)
