Hold

An SCA specific term meaning, "stop at once!" The term is specifically for use in armored combat or rapier combat, used as an order to stop the combatants temporarily, usually so that a potentially dangerous condition can be corrected or relieved, or so the marshal(s) may inquire after a problem. Generally speaking, only the marshals cry ‘hold’, and an observing fighter or other bystander should do so only if they observe a dangerous situation, not merely to halt the combat for any other reason.

In a melee, the combatants kneel during the hold until invited to "stand if you are able" by the marshals before continuing the combat with a cry of lay on!
